Motor Drive

When driving a new energy vehicle, the motor controller converts the direct current (DC) released by the power battery into alternating current (AC) (this process is called inversion), allowing the drive motor to work, and the motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, and then the wheels of the car run through the transmission system (mainly the reducer). Conversely, the process of converting the mechanical energy of the wheel into storage in the battery is kinetic energy recovery.

The heart of an electric vehicle determines the driving behavior and energy efficiency of the vehicle, and is also the part with the largest usage and the highest value of SiC power devices.
Tesla is the first car company in the world to adopt silicon carbide inverters. Its Model 3 uses the 650V SiC MOSFET inverter launched by STMicroelectronics. Compared with the IGBT used in models such as Model X, it can bring 5% to 8% improvement in inverter efficiency, which has a significant improvement in the endurance of electric vehicles.

When direct current passes through the SiC module, the outflow direction and frequency of the current are changed by the rapid opening and closing of different switch combinations, so as to output the desired alternating current.
